Anyway, I just got this amazing email from a fellow student named Tina. It made me happy. Here are the highlights. (The empahasis and illustrations are mine. Actually, I'm lying: I stole the pictures from a google image search.)
I have indeed been living in India for the past 4 months and some of you asked me for some info about it. Well... sh*t I don't know what to say really... I haven't yet adequately answered the question when family and friends ask me what it was like.
The best I explain it is no matter how prepared you think you are for it... it will shatter your world at least once this coming semester but not necessarily in a bad way.
It is a land of utter contrast and extremes; I experienced/witnessed some of the most amazing things in my lifetime as did I experience/witness some of the most difficult and unjust things. All things considered I am truly happy to be going back for a second semester to delve into the mystery that is India again. As for any advice, I would mostly suggest not stressing over being prepared but rather coming with an open mind.
For ladies everything you've read about covering up is true. Even if your wearing western clothing as long as it covers a good portion of you, you should be able to deter any unnecessary advances. But no matter what your wearing you will not be able to avoid being stared at... which I kinda dig because it means it is fair to stare back and you can learn interesting sh*t by looking at someone directly for a time. [I got that picture from a random person's myspace. That shouldn't surprise you, given its angst and intensity.]
Peace, love, and lots of spicy Indian food,
Tina
So apparently, Bangaluru will shatter my world. I think we could all use a good shattering. :)
